Confessions of a Mozzarella-holic ..

Florence, Italy

I admit I am a Mozzarella-holic. It is my biggest weakness . I’m an addict . I confess to that but what can I do ? Would you be able to give up on something so soft , so tender that your teeth just sunk into it on the very first bite ? Would you not give in to the milky, creamy texture of this heavenly divine creation ? And if you stack it up with luscious rounds of ripe tomatoes, fragrant basil leaves, and an indulgent drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil, Dude !! you’ve just killed me !!! Combination Perfectos !

I rather die than to live not to savor this decadence !

It was 10 pm on a rainy November evening and I was walking around the Duomo in Florence.
That is only time it’s ever quiet near the Duomo. Enjoying the magical atmosphere and the quiet of the evening ,I randomly took a right turn and entered what seemed to be a high end area in downtown Florence ,though closed at this time of the hour. This was very unlike the Florence I had experienced so far .Flanked by Chanel, Gucci, Dolce , etc , I entered an archway to a beautiful courtyard. It was dark. No one was outside. You wouldn’t expect people sitting in a courtyard under massively oversized umbrellas on a cold rainy winter evening. I was tempted to turn back but something encouraged me to hang around for a bit.I firmly believe that when you are this close to exploring something , never turn back. It may be nothing significant but you will never regret knowing what it was.

So I stepped forward in the dark towards the door.

It read ‘Obika’ and under it in fine print read ‘Mozzarella Bar’.

Entrance to Obika

You got to be kidding me ! What were the chances that a mozzarella-holic walking on the quiet streets of Florence on one rainy evening would randomly pick a side alley and be standing in front of a Mozzarella Bar and the bar would read ,’Obika’ which literally means ‘Here it is’ !. Was this some sort of a joke ? You can’t magically implant this restaurant for me in the middle of the night in the middle of the street and call it ‘Here it is’ !  Can you ?

Right off then, I remembered a quote from Paulo Coelo’s novel ‘The Alchemist’ – “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

So there ! Now that the whole of universe was conspiring in helping me to get in and sink in my teeth into all the Mozzarella that lay behind this restaurant’s door , I had no choice but to obey the mighty universe 😛 Didn’t I ? You see , I had to resign to my fate.It didn’t leave me with another option.
I entered Obika and Boy Oh Boy !  Is this place swanky or WHAT !!??!!  You enter through a wall of glass to a modern, posh interior filled with tables, a nice bar and open area kitchen. The walls are decorated with mirrors and shelves hold hundreds of wine bottles. But I was not here to live on beauty, was I ? I seated myself and asked the waiter to get me started with a Chianti Classico while I got busy scanning through the menu.

Entrance to Obika

I’ll be honest.I never got to reading the whole menu.My eyes were just fixated to the big box in the center of the menu that read ‘Choose your preferred Mozzarella’ and as soon as I read that , mozzarella balls started floating in my head .All I could think of was mozzarella and mozzarella and more mozzarella hitting me from all ends , some falling right into my mouth , some coming towards me in slow motion , others in fast forward mode.

Obika’s menu

The waiter came to ask me if I needed help but given my state ,I just couldn’t afford to waste another moment.I put my finger on ‘Volturno’ which read strong taste and ‘Burrata ’ that read deliciously creamy. This much of information was sufficient for my brain and taste buds to coordinate amongst themselves and decide on what they wanted. I also ordered a side of cherry tomatoes.

While I was waiting to meet my cheesy lover , I went on google search and did some background research on Mozzarella. This is what I found.Apparently, not all mozzarellas are the same. The difference between the various types lies in their taste: sweet and gentle from Paestum; firm and flavourful from Volturno and stronger and more robust smoked mozzarella is smoked naturally over straw embers. Each of the three varieties of mozzarella have an unmistakable flavor. This is due partly to different processing methods, and partly to the unique composition of the soil in each local area, producing the grass that nourishes the buffalo herds.

Waiting for my Mozzarella to arrive 🙂

My wait was soon over.My eyes lit up at the sight of what lay right in front of me.I needed a moment to gather myself together and appreciate this divinity and eventually gave in.My head never rose from it’s place .My eyes never opened.I was in heaven. This was sheer bliss ! The cherry tomatoes were the best I’ve ever tasted.  Must be the Italian countryside. The wine was perfect as well.
Outstanding together with the Mozzarella !!

Presenting : Volturno ( left ) – strong taste and Burrata ( right ) – deliciously creamy

Somehow in a delicate moment like this , my head started singing a song by Rihanna. It’s titled ‘Umbrella’.
Here goes ,

You have my heart
And we’ll never be worlds apart
Maybe in magazines
But you’ll still be my star
Baby, ’cause in the dark
You can’t see shiny cars
And that’s when you need me there
With you I’ll always share
Because ..

When the sun shines, we’ll shine together
Told you I’d be here forever
Said I’ll always be a friend
Took an oath I’ma stick it out ’til the end
Now that it’s raining more than ever
Know that we’ll still have each other
Looking for my Mozzarella ..
Looking for my Mozzarella ..

(Ella ella eh eh eh)
Where are you my Mozzarella ?
(Ella ella eh eh eh)
Where are you my Mozzarella ?
(Ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh)
[ Original Lyrics by Rihanna ; modifications by a Mozzarella-holic ]

The happy Mozzarella-holic 🙂
